Why Your AC Is Making Weird Noises

It’s the hottest week of a Minnesota summer...

You’re finally dozing off to the hum of your air conditioner when…BAM!…a loud noise jolts you awake.

If you’ve ever been startled by strange sounds coming from your air conditioner, you’re not alone. Ignoring those little noises can lead to a big, sweaty breakdown in the middle of a heatwave.

At Maverick’s Heating & Air, we’ve heard (and fixed) every strange AC noise you can imagine. Here’s a neighbor-friendly guide to what those sounds mean, and what you should do next:

Think of this as your AC’s version of a drum solo. Usually it means something inside is loose or broken, often the compressor, fan blades, or even debris bouncing around inside.

Turn the system off right away and call a pro. Compressors aren’t a DIY project, and waiting can turn an expensive repair into a full replacement.

A buzzing AC is never good news. It can point to electrical issues, a loose fan blade, or dirty condenser coils.

Cut power to the unit and call an HVAC technician. Buzzing can be a fire hazard if ignored.

A high-pitched screech is basically your AC crying for help. It often means a worn fan belt, failing motor bearings, or compressor motor issues.

Turn off the system to prevent more damage and schedule a service call. Replacing a belt now is cheaper than replacing a seized motor later.

This one’s common in Minnesota after a windy day. Twigs, leaves, or loose screws in the outdoor unit are often the culprits.

Turn off the unit and safely remove visible debris. Tighten any loose panels you can reach. Still rattling? Time to call in the pros.

A single click when your AC turns on or off is normal. Repeated clicking? Not normal. It could mean a failing thermostat, capacitor, or control board.

Leave electrical parts to certified techs. They can safely diagnose and repair the issue.

Hissing = refrigerant leak or duct leak. This one’s serious because it reduces cooling power, drives up bills, and harms the environment.

Turn the system off and book a leak inspection. The sooner you catch it, the better.

A gentle hum can be normal. A loud or persistent hum can point to a failing relay switch, motor issue, or control board problem.

Call for service to avoid bigger repairs later.

This noise is usually your ductwork expanding and contracting when the system kicks on.

Have your ducts inspected and sealed. It cuts noise and boosts efficiency.

This often means a blocked drain line or trapped air/refrigerant in the system.

You can try clearing the drain line yourself if you’re comfortable. For refrigerant leaks or stubborn clogs, call a pro.

Relax, this one’s normal. Moving air makes a whooshing sound, especially near vents. Unless it’s unusually loud or paired with other noises, it’s nothing to worry about.

Your AC isn’t making weird noises just to annoy you, it’s telling you something’s wrong. The longer you ignore it, the bigger (and pricier) the problem becomes.

We’re your neighbors here in the Brainerd Lakes area, and we’re here to keep you cool. If your air conditioner is acting up, call Maverick’s Heating & Air before a minor issue turns into a major breakdown. Early detection is always cheaper than emergency repair.

Stay cool out there!
